Lagos and camping Trinidade was our next stop, a cheap site in the town, cant be bad! We used to think the town was expensive and touristy but our minds are changed. There was a large Gypsy market on the Saturday and we managed to find a geocache on way back .On Monday moved on to Villanova de Milfonts with rain chasing us all the way.The sun shone for the next 3days of our stay there. Our next move was to Lagoa St Andre, the electric supply was only 2amp but enough to keep the fridge going.Nice quiet site by lake that was so full it had flooded the car park by the beach. There were lots of owls and birds making peculiar noises but nice site. The beach was lovely, lots of golden sand.
Our next stop was Alcasar do Sol, a night on the river bank in the town. Had a nice walk around the town in the sunshine to look for another geo-cache. It was hidden behind a wall by a church but the lady caretaker saw us and insisted on opening the church and showing us round! we also had to see the museum with a wonderful explanation of the artefacts, in Portuguese! After one night we moved on to Pego do Alta for 3 nights. it was good to see the reservoir full to the brim again after 2 years of being half empty. Next stop was Evora where we met the Dutch couple who were camped by us at Cabanas also a couple who were at Lagos, small world innit! We walked into town to look for 2 more geo-caches but had no luck and it was raining, it did dry up later….
Our next site was a real find, it came highly recommended, inland to a small campsite with 12 or so vans owned and run by a smashing bloke, Gary. The area around was stunning very rural Portugal, we were invited into the house in the afternoon to a “social” gathering with the rest of the vans on the site, met everyone and were told where all the best walks were and some interesting stuff about the area. Very friendly place. The next day we had a walk along the old drovers paths after watching a local lady at the communal washing bath. A stone bath 3metres by 3 metres with running spring water, apparantly she had a washing machine but preferred to use the old sink.
Had a lovely time here and will come back, the weather helped of course very nice and sunny.
All good things come to an end and off we went to the Monfrague National Park. Another lovely place more vultures and huge flappy birds than you could shake a stick at!Scores of them soaring and sat on the rocks quite close enough. A lovely experience and once again we were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, the sun had just come out and they all seemed to take off at once.
A couple more stops on our way to Oredour sur Glane in France. A very moving place, it has been left exactly as it was after the war. A company of SS troops rounded up the whole village, men women and children and killed them all, then set fire to the village. There is a visitor centre explaining the history. We stayed a couple of days.
It was coming up to Easter so we headed for L’aguillon sur mer and a site for a few days. It was very quiet but a few people arrived over the weekend. Because we tend to be a bit out of touch during the winter we didn’t realize this was one of the places hardest hit in the storms during the winter. They had done a very good job of cleaning the place up. The beach was still being rebuilt a local chap was explaining to us how deep the water was in the town.
A few more stops and then the tunnel and home. We were away for 6 months this time and although we enjoyed ourselves it seemed we were away for a very long time. After a couple of weeks at home trying to see dentists and doctors we were off to St. Leonards Farm Caravan Park for our summer season. Fingers crossed its ok!
Lots of birdwatching going on there !
